Surroundings
Apart from the fans of sailing and water sports, Mikołajki attract also the nature lovers. Within just a few kilometers from this Mazurian town, there is the Mazurian Landscape Park, whose area amounts to 55.000 ha. Its protective zone is about 18.000 ha, of which the forests occupy over 29.000 ha, and the rivers and lakes about 17.000 ha. The remaining area constitutes farm land and built-up areas.
The Mazurian Landscape Park, which is located at the contact of two different geomorphological forms, terminal morain and sandurs, protects the richness and variety of the flora and fauna, abundance of forests, moors, lakes and ground waters.
The nature of the park includes:
• over 60 lakes, including the largest Polish lake – Sniardwy lake,
• Krutyń river considered one of the most interesting canoeing routes in Europe,
• about 850 species of vascular plants
• rich fauna and over 200 species of birds
• 11 nature reserves including the UNESCO biosphere reservoir – Luknajno Lake.

The preparations to separate the National Mazurian Park from a part of the present Mazurian Landscape Park have lasted for a few years.
